If you love the look of traditional quilts, like the Irish chain quilt but dread cutting out little squares and sewing them together then you really should check out the techniques laid out in Tradition with a Twist.

The quilts are pieced together using strips, a rotary cutter and cutting mat. This is the fastest method for putting together an Irish chain quilt. You won’t have to cut out hundreds of squares of fabric and painstakingly sew the squares together, instead, you will piece together strips of fabric and sew these strips together. Then the strips will be cut and sew together with other cut strips.

My Scrappy Irish Chain Quilt

Irish Chain QuiltI have actually cut out and pieced together an entire queen sized Irish chain quilt from this book in about a day. It was a long day though! :-D   This is the Irish chain quilt I put together in a day. I actually varied the instructions a bit because I wanted to use up scraps from my scrap drawer.

I call this quilt, “My Pride and Joy”. I think it’s one of the best quilts I’ve ever made, I love scrappy quilts and looking at this scrappy Irish chain quilt gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling.  This is something my Great Grandma would have had in her house.  I love how the quilt is so homey and old fashioned looking.  The quilt lives on the back of my couch all year round.  I absolutely love it!  The Irish chain quilt has a flannel back, which is perfect for snuggling up with on cold winter nights.

Blanche gives clear and concise directions for all the patterns in the book.  This quilt book is perfect for the advanced and beginner quilter alike.  Anyone who loves traditional quilts would love to add this book to their collection.

Tradition with a Twist is unique in that you can make each of the quilts in various sizes. If you want a queen “blooming 9 patch” quilt or a twin sized “blooming 9 patch” quilt, there are clear directions on how to accomplish this. You won’t have to do any figuring out since you will be able to see what you need to do by looking at the diagram. There are also crib sized quilt options which are perfect for making a last minute gift.

My daughter’s Irish Chain Quilt

I once made the Irish chain quilt identical to the one pictured below, the same fabrics and everything for a baby shower gift. My youngest daughter, who was about 5 or 6 at the time, got so jealous, she begged me to make her the exact same quilt. I ended up putting together her quilt and quilting it in just two days.  She’s 13 years old now and still loves her quilt.  She still keeps it on her bed!

Baby Irish Chain Quilt

I’m actually on my 2nd copy of the Tradition with a Twist because my first copy I let someone borrow and I never got it back.  I couldn’t stand not having my favorite quilt book so I went and bought another copy.

If you are wanting to make an Irish chain quilt with a fast easy method, you can’t go wrong with Tradition with a Twist!

Here’s what other people are saying about this book

This is an excellent book for a new or experienced quilter who wants to make a fantastic, complicated looking quilt using the secret of strips. My Blooming 9 Patch is my most exquisite project to date! This book would make a lovely gift for anyone who loves making quilts.

I’ve had this book for several years and have made 3 quilts from it (two different Trips Around the World and a Boston Common). The directions are so complete and easy to follow. Everyone who sees these quilts can’t believe I made them without taking a class. I am planning to do a Blooming 9 Patch next.
Blooming 9 patch color selection has always scared me. But reading about it in Traditions with a Twist gives me the confidence to do it.

My favorite quilting book… and I have a LOT of them.

This is without a doubt my very favorite quilt book. I have owned this book for several years. It was one of the first books I purchased, and it is still my favorite. I have completed a number of quilts using patterns in this book. Several have blue ribbons! I highly recommend this book to any quilter.

Of course you may also want to make your own miniature Irish chain quilt. Miniature quilts are fun to make but they do require precise cutting, sewing, and ironing. Any small mistakes made will look like HUGE mistakes on a quilt of this small scale.
